How Long Does It Take to See a Psychiatric Provider in Washington?

Mind & Metabolism · November 2, 2026 · 3 min read · Reviewed by Elizabeth Calfos, DNP, PMHNP-BC

If you've tried to find a psychiatrist in Washington, you've probably run into long waits, full schedules, or practices that don't take your insurance. You're not imagining it. There aren't enough psychiatric providers for everyone who needs one, especially outside the Seattle area. The good news is that there are ways to get seen faster.

Why the wait can be long

Many psychiatric practices have more patients than they can schedule, and some don't accept new patients at all. Wait times vary a lot depending on where you live, your insurance, whether you need a specific specialty, and whether you're willing to do visits by video. In rural parts of the state, the nearest in-person provider can be hours away.

Ways to get seen sooner

If you can't wait

If things feel urgent or you're having thoughts of harming yourself, don't wait for an appointment. Call or text 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or call 911.
