What to Expect at Your First Psychiatric Appointment

A lot of people put off booking a first psychiatric appointment because they don't know what will happen once they're in the room. Will you have to share everything at once? Will you leave with a prescription you're not sure about? Knowing what to expect takes a lot of the pressure off.

Before the visit

You'll fill out an intake form with basic information, your insurance, and a few questions about what's going on. Our team verifies your benefits ahead of time so there are no surprises. If it's a telehealth visit, you'll get a secure video link. Find a quiet, private spot where you can talk openly, and plan for about an hour.

It helps to have these handy:

During the visit

A first psychiatric evaluation is mostly a conversation. We'll ask what's been happening, how long it's been going on, and how it affects your daily life. We'll also ask about sleep, stress, relationships, physical health, substance use, and family history. Some questions might feel personal. You can always say you'd rather not answer something yet.

You won't be judged for anything you share. The goal is to understand the full picture so the plan actually fits you.

At the end

You should leave with a clear sense of what's going on, your options, and next steps. If medication could help, we'll explain why we're recommending it, what to expect, and common side effects. You're always part of that decision. Sometimes the best next step is something else, like labs through your primary care provider or a referral to a therapist, and we'll tell you that directly.

After that

Follow up visits are shorter. If you start medication, we'll check in regularly through medication management visits to see what's working and adjust as needed. Visits can be by telehealth anywhere in Washington or in person in Lakewood when available. Wondering about cost? See the plans we accept.

If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or call 911. Mind & Metabolism is an outpatient practice and can't provide emergency care.
